House of Wonders Zanzibar Zanzibar

The House of Wonders in Zanzibar was built in the 1880s as a traditional palace and the most impressive building on the sea front. Throughout the colonial era the museum was used as the head office of the administration. After the Revolution the building was transformed into a museum and a school for the controlling party.

In the House of Wonders Museum the design was specifically historical and is meant to cover the entire Swahili coast from Northern Mozambique up to Somalia.

A substantial amount of research has been undertaken to reveal a long and rich history that can now be systematically exhibited. The House of Wonders Museum highlights the historical and cultural cost of the union along the East African coast between the continental Africa and the world of the Indian Ocean.
